Coupon Code Not Working? 12 Common Reasons and Fixes

September 21, 2026

You found a promising promo code, pasted it at checkout, and the discount did not appear. It is frustrating, but it is also very common. Coupon codes are controlled entirely by the retailer, and they come with conditions that are easy to miss. Below are the 12 most common reasons a coupon code fails, and what you can do about each one.

1. The code has expired or is not active yet

Every promo code has a start and end date, and stores often end offers early without any announcement. Check the “Valid until” date on the coupon card and read the offer details. Some campaigns, such as flash sales and holiday promotions, only run during a specific window, and that window usually follows the store’s own time zone rather than yours. If the date has passed, the code is unlikely to work, so try another offer for the same store.

2. The code was typed or copied incorrectly

Codes are usually case-sensitive and must be entered exactly as shown. A trailing space, a missing character, or a letter O typed instead of the number 0 is enough to make a code fail. The safest approach is to use the copy button in the pop-up and paste the code into the checkout box instead of typing it by hand. Also make sure no extra spaces were pasted before or after the code.

3. Your order does not meet the minimum spend

Many offers only apply once your basket reaches a minimum value, for example “$20 off orders over $150”. Some stores calculate this amount before shipping and taxes, and some count only full-price items. If you are just below the threshold, adding one more eligible item may unlock the discount.

4. Some products are excluded

Sale items, clearance products, gift cards, new arrivals and certain brands are often excluded from promo codes. A code can be perfectly valid and still not apply to what is in your cart. Open “More details” on the coupon card to read the terms, and try the code with a single eligible item to see whether it is accepted.

5. The offer is for new customers or first orders only

Welcome codes usually apply only to a first purchase, a new account, or a new email address. If you have already ordered from the store before, the system may reject the code. Some codes are also limited to one use per customer or per household.

6. The code cannot be combined with other promotions

Most retailers allow only one promo code per order, and a code may be blocked when an automatic sale, loyalty discount or another voucher is already applied. Try removing other discounts or gift vouchers from your cart and apply the code again. It is worth comparing the order total both ways so you keep the bigger saving.

7. The offer is limited to a specific country or regional site

A code created for one country’s website often will not work on another. If you are shopping on a regional version of the store, or your delivery address is outside the region the offer was made for, the code may be refused. Make sure you are on the correct country site and that your shipping address is in an eligible location.

8. It only works in a certain channel, payment method or delivery option

Some codes work only in the mobile app, only on the website, or only in physical stores. Others require a particular payment method, such as a specific credit card, or a particular delivery option. Free-shipping codes, for example, commonly apply only to standard delivery and above a certain order value.

9. The code needs a login, membership or newsletter signup

Certain offers are reserved for logged-in customers, loyalty programme members or newsletter subscribers. Sign in to your account on the store’s website, or join the programme if it is free, and then apply the code again.

10. The usage limit has been reached

Retailers sometimes cap the total number of times a code can be used, or end a promotion as soon as stock or budget runs out. If a code worked earlier but has stopped, the limit may simply have been reached. Try a different offer, or check the promotions page on the store’s own website.

11. Browser, cookie or cache problems

Sometimes the code is fine and the problem is on your side. Ad blockers, coupon browser extensions, old cached data or blocked cookies can interfere with the checkout page and stop the discount from applying. Refresh the page, clear your cookies and cache, open a private or incognito window, or try a different browser or device.

12. A temporary glitch at checkout

Checkout systems occasionally have bugs, especially during big sale events when traffic is very high. If a code that should be valid is rejected, wait a few minutes and try again, or complete your order later.

Quick checklist before you give up

  • Copy and paste the code instead of typing it.
  • Read the terms under “More details” on the coupon card.
  • Confirm your cart meets the minimum spend and contains eligible items.
  • Remove other promotions or vouchers, then apply the code again.
  • Check that you are on the correct country site and, if the offer requires it, signed in.
  • Try a private window or another browser with extensions turned off.
  • Test another code from the store’s coupon list.

What to do if none of these work

If you have tried everything and the code still fails, contact the store’s customer support and ask them to confirm the code’s conditions. Support agents can often see exactly why a code was rejected, and they can sometimes apply a discount manually. It can also help to sign up for the store’s newsletter, since retailers often send a welcome code, and to check the store’s website for its own promotions banner.

Offers change quickly. If a code no longer works, try another offer from the same store page, or browse our store directory to find the latest coupon codes and deals for your favourite retailers.

Coupon terms are set by each retailer and can change at any time. Always check your final order total before you complete your purchase.
